Crafting with Calcean: Halloween Sand Decor
It’s the week before Halloween, and you are hosting a party that needs a perfect centerpiece with some accent pieces. Or maybe you’re getting together with friends and want a fun craft for the kids. Perhaps you just want fresh, new decorations this year, but nothing too “tricky”…
Calcean’s got you covered.
Calcean specializes in Baha Play Sand – a renewable and sustainable safe play sand that’s not limited to sandboxes, and also not limited to kids. It is the ecofriendly choice of play sands in several ways, including but not limited to:
BIOGENIC: Baha Play Sand is actually a mineral called oolitic aragonite that looks, feels, and handles like sand, but is actually a highly pure calcium carbonate that is made in the ocean.
RENEWABLE & SUSTAINABLE: Oolitic aragonite forms naturally and continuously in the ocean and is a renewable and sustainable resource.
NEGATIVE CARBON FOOTPRINT: Oolitic aragonite removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than its harvesting emits, meaning it has a negative carbon footprint.
SILICA-FREE & NON-TOXIC: Baha Play Sand is naturally silica-free and quartz-free, making it a safer sand. For the colored sands, the coloring is safe and non-toxic.
If the environmental perks aren’t enough, we’re here and handy to fit your holiday schedule.
All our Baha Play Sand color offerings are available in 20 lb. bags at our Gadsden, AL, office (140 Thomas Drive, Gadsden, AL 35904) for purchase and same-day pickup.
Baha Play Sand also is available online at Home Depot, Amazon, and Walmart for all your upcoming holiday needs (play sand makes a great gift)!
Colors are as follows:
Sunset Red
Orange Sherbet
Sunny Yellow
Palm Green
Aqua Blue
Flamingo Pink
Onyx Black
And our best-seller, Natural Sand (no color added)
One of the best things about Baha Play Sand is its versatility. We gathered some basic items like glass vases and plastic trays to make many of these displays, as well as some other, spookier props we had already used for decorating.
Here are some of our favorites, with a few instructions on how we did them. There are no exact measurements…we just eyeballed the décor to get the effects we were looking for. Feel free to create your own, experiment with colors, and use your imagination!
FRANKEN-SAND VASE (3 Easy Steps)
Baha Play Sand – Palm Green
Baha Play Sand – Onyx Black
Clear glass or plastic vase or jar
Dry-erase marker (if you want to draw a face on glass)
Pencil (or the marker) for setting the “hairline”
Tealight/votive or flameless candle (optional)
Fill the vase with about 2/3 green sand (for the face) and 1/3 black sand (for the hair).
Poke the pencil or marker down into the sand along the edges of the vase to draw the “hair” indentions. Get creative!
Draw a funny or spooky face with the dry-erase marker. (You can also place the candle atop the hair if desired.)
CANDY CORN VASE (Super Easy!)
Baha Play Sand – Sunny Yellow
Baha Play Sand – Orange Sherbet
Baha Play Sand – Natural Sand
Clear glass or plastic vase or jar
*Tealight/votive or flameless candle (optional)
Fill the vase from bottom to top to resemble a piece of candy corn: 1/3 yellow sand (bottom), 1/3 orange sand (middle), and 1/3 natural sand (top).
*We like votives or tealight candles (real or flameless) on top of these decorations. Using different sizes and heights of clear containers could make a pretty, dimensional centerpiece!
STRIPEY SKULL (Choose Your Container and Colors!)
Baha Play Sand – Sunny Yellow
Baha Play Sand – Orange Sherbet
Skull-shaped plastic container or any other clear container
Tealight/votive or flameless candle (optional)
The fun of this one is you can pick any container or colors you like! We just happened to have a semi-clear skull cup and chose orange and yellow sand to make some stripes…kind of like a mummy. Glinting votives are always a nice addition. We think any colors will do!
SKELETON SAND TRAY (Make it Fun!)
Baha Play Sand – Sunset Red
Plastic tray
Props for digging (we used plastic skeleton hands with an accent skull)
This display is hands-on with tons of options! The kids will love playing outside in the tray of sand.
Try making a spooky treasure hunt with a deeper tray, and hide figurines and candy in the sand.
Need a moment of peace after the party’s over? Reuse the tray and sand to set up an eerie Halloween village scene.
Trick or treat with Calcean in the holidays to come, too…we’ll be sure to concoct some décor ideas for Thanksgiving and Christmas as well.
